What is breast milk fortification?

Breast milk fortification means increasing the calories or nutrients in expressed breast milk based on a healthcare provider’s feeding plan. In many cases, the goal is to help an infant receive more nutrition in the same feeding volume.

Traditional fortification often uses formula powder or commercial human milk fortifiers. Milkify Medical offers a different approach for appropriate patients: using freeze-dried Mom’s Own Milk as a caloric supplement, with analysis and recipe guidance to support the provider’s target caloric goal.

Designed for infants >1800g, under provider supervision only

Your baby’s healthcare provider should determine whether fortification is appropriate and what caloric density is needed.

Why it matters

Because human milk varies, fortification should be individualized.

Human milk composition naturally varies from parent to parent and over time. Milkify Medical uses macronutrient analysis to better understand both the starting milk and the freeze-dried powder. That information helps create mixing instructions aligned with the care team’s requested caloric target.

Clinical assessment is needed to determine whether additional vitamin, mineral, or other supplementation is required.

How it works

How Milkify Medical MOM Fortification works.

01

Consultation

Milkify’s medical team speaks with the family, reviews the feeding goals, and collects provider information.

02

Baseline Milk Analysis

A baseline frozen sample, typically representing 24-hour milk collection, is analyzed to establish composition.

03

SafeDry™ Processing

Milk remains frozen, is processed contact-free, and each bag remains traceable through the workflow.

04

Powder Analysis + Recipe

Freeze-dried powder is analyzed, and a custom fortification recipe is created using Miris data and the provider-ordered caloric goal.

05

Family + Provider Support

Instructions and calculations are shared with the care team and family for supervised use.

When families ask

When families ask about fortifying breast milk.

Families usually find Milkify after a provider recommends increasing calories in expressed milk, or after a baby has difficulty tolerating another fortification approach. Milkify Medical helps families explore whether freeze-dried Mom’s Own Milk may be appropriate for their situation.

Premature or late-preterm infants

Babies needing additional calories beyond what unfortified expressed milk provides.

Volume-limited infants

Babies who need more calories per ounce because feeding volume is restricted.

Medically complex infants

Babies with provider-supervised feeding plans and individualized caloric targets.

Maintaining a maternal-milk diet

Families trying to continue an exclusive maternal milk diet when clinically appropriate.

These are examples of situations where families may ask about fortification. Milkify Medical does not determine medical necessity without provider involvement.

Stories

Families using Mom’s Own Milk for fortification.

“Milkify gave my baby, my family, and me the breathing room we so desperately needed. Weight gain had been a constant struggle, and fortifying with formula only made things worse — my baby couldn’t tolerate it, cried endlessly, and we never reached the calories our doctor recommended. Everything changed when we began fortifying with my own breast milk. The fussiness disappeared, and his weight gain took off without any adjustment period. After four months in the NICU, two surgeries, and countless tears, Milkify helped give our boy back, and that is something I will carry with me forever.”

“I have a baby who has significant reflux and feeding issues. At 3 months old he developed a feeding aversion and dropped to the 1st percentile. Because of his reflux our Dr did not want to fortify with formula. I found Milkify and we are currently using it to fortify his bottles to try to get some extra calories. He’s had no problems with the powder and it hasn’t caused any reactions with his reflux. This company has been a godsend for our son and my mental health.”

“I am so excited to have found this service. We have been fortifying my son’s milk since birth due to a rare genetic disorder. When I found out about Milkify, I knew we needed to try it! My son accepted the freeze dried milk immediately (had previously rejected frozen breastmilk) and it has helped calm some of his reflux already from the formula fortification. Truly an investment worth making for us!”

Common questions

Breast milk fortification FAQ.

What does it mean to fortify breast milk?
Fortifying breast milk means increasing its caloric density or nutrient content according to a healthcare provider’s feeding plan. This is usually done when an infant needs more nutrition than standard expressed milk provides at a given feeding volume.
Can I fortify breast milk at home?
You should not fortify breast milk without guidance from your baby’s healthcare provider. The appropriate recipe depends on your baby’s medical needs, feeding plan, and target caloric density.
How does freeze-dried Mom’s Own Milk work for fortification?
A portion of expressed milk is freeze-dried into powder. Under provider supervision, that powder may be mixed back into expressed milk to increase calories using individualized instructions.
Does Milkify Medical test the milk?
Milkify Medical uses macronutrient analysis to evaluate key components such as calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. The results help inform individualized mixing guidance for the care team’s target.
Is this the same as formula fortification?
No. Milkify Medical uses freeze-dried Mom’s Own Milk as the caloric supplement when appropriate. Some infants may still need other forms of supplementation based on clinical assessment.
Who decides whether fortification is appropriate?
The baby’s healthcare provider should determine whether fortification is needed and what caloric target should be used.
